Monday's Slides 4/30/07

Today we worked with an arithmetic sequence, talked about scribe posts, and made a stat plot of the ratio of successive terms of the Fibonacci sequence.

The POD was about an arithmetic sequence. It seemed many people got caught up in trying find and use "the correct formula." A better approach was to think about it logically. The key question to ask was, "How many jumps?". Some people thought that there were 15 jumps, others thought 16. Drawing a small part of a number line was a great way to decide that 16 was correct.

Remember, a recursive definition has two parts:

  • Define the 1st term
  • Define the rule for producing the next term from the one(s) before it.

Reminders:

  • Quiz on Wednesday

  • Scribe Posts start Thursday (Sofia and Juliana volunteered)

  • Read the post on writing scribe posts so you know what is expected.

We also made a stat plot of the ratios of successive terms in the Fibonacci sequence (the rabbit sequence). The stat plot is shown on the right. The horizontal axis is just the term number in the ratio sequence while the vertical axis is the ratio. The scale is 1 on both axes.

The question that we were to answer was: "From looking at the graph, what can you say about the ratio of successive terms of the Fibonacci sequence? Write out a sentence or two and be as specific as you can. You can add your answer as a comment if you want.
